Overview In addition to our traditional payments portfolio, Mastercard is aggressively expanding into new payment flow and leveraging the digital and connected world of people and economies to deliver faster, reliable and more efficient propositions to make payments – send or receive money. The Cross Border program is part of the wider Disbursement & Remittances business that we are looking to expand at a compounded rate of 50% per year for the next 5 years. We are building solutions to enable payments in an any-to-any format – anyone, anywhere can send or receive money using any channel – money exchanges, banks, digital wallets, cards or fintech apps – providing a seamless and unified experience for both individuals and business to move money. We are looking for a passionate, innovative and experienced engineers with a proven track record in leading the evolution of software products and their implementation in various markets – comfortable both working hands-on as well as guiding and mentoring a team of engineers and critically always challenging the status quo and pushing and driving the technology roadmap to ensure that the solutions leverage technology to the maximum extent Role The Software Engineer II is an experienced software engineer specializing in Java development and microservices architecture. This role independently develops scalable, cloud-ready applications while contributing to software design, architecture, operational excellence, and production support. Responsibilities - Design software components by translating product requirements into scalable technical solutions. - Contribute to software architecture decisions and technical design discussions. - Build modular, extensible, maintainable, and performant applications. - Design, execute, and maintain unit, functional, and integration tests. - Apply secure coding practices throughout the software development lifecycle. - Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering quality standards. - Support system performance optimization, scalability improvements, and reliability initiatives. - Design applications with observability, operational readiness, and supportability in mind. - Research new technologies, frameworks, and engineering practices. - Participate in proof-of-concepts and technical experimentation. - Troubleshoot application and production issues using structured root cause analysis. - Support applications throughout their lifecycle, including production support. - Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver business solutions. About You - Has ability to write secure code in Java and familiar with secure coding standards (e.g., OWASP, CWE, SEI CERT) and vulnerability management - Efficient in Java, Spring, SpringBoot, JPA, Angular, SQL - Understands the basic engineering principles used in building and running mission critical software capabilities (security, customer experience, testing, operability, simplification, service-oriented architecture) - Able to perform debugging and troubleshooting to analyze core, heap, thread dumps and remove coding errors - Understands and implements standard branching (e.g., Gitflow) and peer review practices - Experience in leveraging AI tooling for improved efficiency and quality of the software - Has skills in test driven and behavior driven development (TDD and BDD) to build just enough code and collaborate on the desired functionality - Understands use cases for advanced design patterns (e.g., service-to-worker, MVC, API gateway, intercepting filter, dependency injection, lazy loading, all from the gang of four) to implement efficient code - Understands and implements Application Programming Interface (API) standards and cataloging to drive API/service adoption and commercialization - Has skills to author test code with lots of smaller tests followed by few contract tests at service level and fewer journey tests at the integration level (Test Pyramid concept) - Apply tools (e.g., Sonar, Zally, Checkmarx ) and techniques to scan and measure code quality and anti-patterns as part of development activity - Has skills to collaborate with team and business stakeholders to estimate requirements (e.g., story pointing) and prioritize based on business value - Has skills to elaborate and estimate non-functional requirements, including security (e.g., data protection, authentication, authorization), regulatory, and performance (SLAs, throughput, transactions per second) - Has skills to orchestrate release workflows and pipelines, and apply standardized pipelines via APIs to achieve CI and CD using industry standard tools (e.g., Jenkins, XL Release, others). - Has skills to understand, report, and optim
