ABOUT THE ROLE Lead a core engineering team building AI-powered tax and financial software that transforms complex documents into structured data for professional users. This hands-on player-coach role combines technical contribution, team leadership, and close collaboration with customer-facing colleagues. WHAT YOU'LL DO - Manage and develop a team of 4 to 7 senior, staff, and principal engineers, with plans to grow the team. - Contribute to production code, review designs, read pull requests, and debug challenging technical issues alongside the team. - Ship customer-facing AI products using evaluation-driven development to improve the reliability of document data extraction. - Coach engineers through direct feedback, strengthen technical and product judgment, and support their growth into larger roles. - Lead hiring and onboarding while building a high-performing engineering team. - Work with tax professionals and customer-facing teams to connect engineering decisions to customer and business needs. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR - 10 to 20 years of software engineering experience, including hands-on individual contributor work and formal engineering leadership. - Experience leading customer-facing products and managing a team of engineers, ideally including staff or principal-level colleagues. - Strong backend, backend infrastructure, or backend-leaning full-stack experience, with a record of contributing to production software regularly. - Experience hiring, onboarding, coaching, and setting clear performance expectations for engineers. - Exposure to AI or machine learning systems, such as document AI, retrieval-based systems, agentic systems, or evaluation-driven development. - Python, TypeScript, and cloud infrastructure experience are useful. COMPENSATION & BENEFITS Annual salary range: $415,000 to $450,000 USD. Visa sponsorship is available. LOCATION On-site in San Francisco, California, United States.
